Detailing
The bottle is the easy part. Ninety percent of whether a coating lasts is decided before you open it.
A ceramic coating is a liquid that cross-links into a hard, slick, semi-permanent layer bonded to your clear coat. When it works it gives you two years of easy washing, strong water beading and real protection against the acidic bird droppings and tree sap that etch paint in this climate.
When it fails — patchy, streaky, gone in three months — it is essentially never the product. It is the surface it was asked to bond to.
The prep is the product
A coating bonds to what is on the paint. If what is on the paint is old wax, road film, embedded iron particles and a layer of bonded contamination, the coating bonds to that, and it leaves when that leaves.
- Wash thoroughly with a pH-neutral shampoo and a two-bucket method
- Decontaminate chemically — an iron remover pulls out embedded brake dust
- Clay the whole car; run your hand over the paint after and feel the difference
- Polish, at minimum a light one-step, to remove the swirls you are about to lock under glass for two years
- Panel wipe with an IPA solution to strip every trace of polishing oil
- Only then, coat
Conditions matter more here
Work indoors, out of direct sun, ideally below 30 °C and out of high humidity. Coating a hot panel flashes the solvent before you can level it, which is what causes the high spots and rainbow streaking people complain about.
Do one panel at a time. Apply thin, wait for the flash, and level with a clean suede then a clean microfibre. Give it twenty-four hours before it sees water and a week before it sees a proper wash.
Be honest about your patience
A full prep and coat is a two-day job done properly. If that is not realistic, a good sealant gives you six months for a tenth of the effort, and there is no shame in that. The worst outcome is a rushed coating over unprepped paint — you get none of the benefit and you have locked the defects in.
